Articulation

What is Articulation?

Articulation is the process that links two educational institutions to help students make a smooth transition from the Community College to the college or university without experiencing a delay or duplication of coursework.  Courses at the Community College are identified as equivalent to courses at the university.  This allows students to fulfill a university requirement by taking an identified equivalent course (articulated course) at the Community College.  This equivalency, or articulation, can be done course-to-course, for major requirements and/or for general education requirements.  In some cases, courses are only articulated (identified) as elective courses.  This means that though the units will transfer, the course does not fulfill any of the above listed requirements.  Santa Monica College has articulation agreements with a variety of institutions of higher education.  They include, University of California (UC) campuses, California State University (CSU) campuses, private and out-of-state colleges/universities.

    ASSIST

ASSIST is an online student-transfer information system that shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California’s public colleges and universities and provides the most accurate and up-to-date information about student transfer in California.

One of the most important aspects of a successful transfer is the completion of significant coursework in the major prior to transfer, for two very specific reasons.

One, completion of major coursework makes you more attractive for admission, especially for the more competitive universities.

Two, completion of major coursework at SMC prior to transfer will allow you to graduate after transfer in a more timely manner.

www.assist.org has listed the exact courses that you must complete at SMC to satisfy lower-division major requirements prior to transfer to public California universities, but not all majors at all universities are included at this site.
